Wholeness Revealed

Wholeness was revealed on October 1 when Laurence left this chapter of his life and went on to the next. I will be the first to admit that his passing does not fit my pictures of what I had prayed for and what I envisioned for our life together. But I know prayer is always answered and it was answered in a way that was as big as Laurence’s energy, as big as his capacity for life and for love, as big as his love for God.

Many times Laurence and I had talked about transitions. He had supported several family members and friends through their last days of life. We commented how the ideal way to leave this life is to let go while asleep, peacefully and without pain and suffering.

His doctors told us in June that he wasn’t strong enough to fight the fungal brain infection, weak heart and multiple strokes. We expected him to take this opportunity to leave peacefully but he didn’t. He woke up, regained strength and speech. The fungal brain infection mysteriously disappeared, his heart became stronger and even the cerebral hemorrhage began to heal. He was responding to therapy and relearning how to walk.

Dozens, no hundreds of people responded to my request and joined with prayers for wholeness. Friends appealed to other friends and prayers rippled out. People who didn’t normally pray were actively envisioning wholeness for Laurence.

Isn't that just like Laurence? His dream of ministering to others became a reality as we all lifted our hearts and minds in prayer. He ministered to every doctor, nurse, technician as love filled his room. He gave grateful thanks to each person whether they took blood, administered tests or emptied the trash.

Eventually his body could no longer cope with his symptoms. Laurence grew weaker and pain increased. He fought for over one hundred days until he said he was finished. I realize now how graciously prayer was answered. There was no way this extraordinary man of courage and strength was going to slip away in the dark of night. Wholeness was revealed for Laurence as he intentionally walked each step of his journey. Once he decided to let go, he consciously said goodbye to his family and friends. His body grew weaker but his voice was clear as he whispered constant words of gratitude and love to God in his last days.

Wholeness was revealed for each of us as we were called to love more graciously, pray more intimately and expand our faith. We were all lifted in an amazing experience of God’s love and a deepening of faith.

Thank you for walking this journey with me. Thank you for your extraordinary prayers and love. I trust your life was changed forever from knowing Laurence as mine was.

This is my last entry for this blog. It seems appropriate on the last day of this year. I will continue to blog at Empowered Thoughts and share my experience of grief at Missing My Beloved.

May God continue to bless you and may every prayer you prayed for us be abundantly returned to you. May God continue to reveal wholeness in every area of your life.

My heart overflows with gratitude every time I think of all the loving support Laurence received from the medical community. I wish I could thank every doctor, nurse, CNA, technician, and hospital staff member that made a difference in our lives. They are extraordinary heroes that blessed us.

Grateful Thanks

December 22 will be the one year anniversary of Laurence's diagnosis with leukemia. He was admitted to the hospital on Christmas Eve.

I miss him terribly although there are days where I feel Laurence is standing next to me telling me not to worry and showering me with his love. Several times I experienced solutions appear to pressing problems and felt his guidance.

I am so grateful for each of you and how dedicated you've been to reading the blog and sending prayers. I have felt your love and support and it has lifted me on many days when I could barely cope.

My prayer for you is that every prayer you have prayed is abundantly returned to you. My the Christ's Love and Grace bless you and your family.

I am so grateful to everyone that attended the service today. It was bittersweet to feel such deep sadness and then incredible joy to see friends I haven't seen in a while. There was truly a presence of love and grace in the room.

Legacy of Love

Laurence made living in love seem effortless and natural. Looking back I realize now his unwavering intention and commitment. There were simple principles that allowed him to live a life of love and grace.

Paid attention. Laurence gave each person his full concentration. Whether it was the waiter bringing his meal or the nurse drawing his labs, he inquired about their jobs, families and their interests. He remembered birthdays and anniversaries and acknowledged important dates. He stayed connected with his Mom, his siblings and his children. He took the time to truly listen. I was so grateful for his willingness to listen to my ideas, concerns and dreams. Unless of course it was a Sunday in the middle of a game during football season or Saturday during college season or March Madness. But other than that, he was an extraordinary listener.

Stepped aside. He opened the door for everyone and always let others go ahead. This simple act was a symbol for his humbleness and generosity. He genuinely wanted others to succeed. He didn’t dwell on disappointment but focused on the next task at hand. Rather than be hurt by an offhand comment, he would step aside from the remark and not take it personally. He was willing to forgive.

Spread joy. Laurence had a great sense of humor, a brilliant smile and a contagious laugh. When times were tense, he spoke up in one of his funny voices or cracked a silly joke. His face lit up with joy when he talked about his children and grandchildren. When I was worried or troubled, he took my hand and we danced.

Gave thanks. Laurence’s most frequent words were thank you. He blessed and gave thanks each day for his family. He thanked me for doing the laundry, for running errands and for taking care of our home. He thanked every person in the hospital whether they emptied the trash, took his blood or diagnosed a test. He always noticed and acknowledged what people were doing right. And he always gave thanks to God.

Walked in faith. Laurence was deeply devoted to God and never once lost his faith. After his stroke he fervently practiced reading and memorizing Psalm 103. He joyfully prayed with each prayer partner that entered his room.

Doing each of these things alone is admirable. Together they morph into the exquisite expression of love. This was Laurence’s legacy of love. But I realized there was one more thing.

Laurence taught me how to receive. Receive his love and generosity as a husband, his compassion and thoughtfulness as my friend, his wisdom as my teacher. He reminded me each day of the importance of receiving God’s love.

When our world unraveled with Laurence’s health challenges this past year I once again learned to receive. I asked for your prayers and you responded earnestly. I needed help at the hospital and a team of loving, supportive friends visited Laurence regularly for five months at the hospital and rehab, to talk with him, pray with him, laugh with him, and assist him with whatever he needed. I am so grateful to receive your homemade meals, airport rides, massages, your loving phone calls, encouraging emails and your constant prayers. Thank you so much for your generosity and for your gracious gifts.

One day at the hospital I read a few of the letters and cards you sent to Laurence and when I finished he commented, “We have stellar friends.” Yes we do. Praise God.

Thank you for being stellar friends. Thank you for being gracious givers and receivers. Laurence was truly a gift from God. We have all been blessed and are changed forever. I love you Laurence. Thank you God.

Our beloved Laurence passed away peacefully at home Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, after enduring a long and heroic fight with cancer. Laurence is survived by his wife, Christine; children, Jason, Melinda, and Daniel; grandchildren, Maryssa, Makenzie, Jaiden, Jayla, and Jenaya; mother, Martha; six sisters; and five brothers. Born one of 17 children in Los Angeles, Laurence developed a great sense of humor and a deep caring for his family. Over the years he worked in restaurant management, catering, health food sales, and financial planning. He was an ordained minister. Laurence's radiant smile and loving heart always reminded us to be grateful for all that we share in this abundant life. He is truly missed and his spirit will be a blessing to us always. A celebration of life ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, in Sunset Presbyterian Church, Portland. Team in Training

Many thanks to Laurence's high school friend Bonny and Team Green (in photo: Robin, Ron, Bonny, David and Diane) for braving the rainy NW weather and running in the Portland Marathon on Sunday in honor of Laurence. It was an privilege to meet the team and cheer them on. Members from Team Green will take part in the Long Beach marathon next weekend.

Heidi Hill also participated in the Portland Marathon Yesterday and proudly wore a special ribbon for Laurence on her purple Team in Training jersey. Heidi is running with her mom and sister in the Nike Women's marathon in San Francisco next weekend. Heidi and her family will head to Athens, Greece, to participate in the 2,500th anniversary of the original marathon (from Marathon, Greece, to Athens, Greece) on October 31. Awesome!

Thank you all for your dedication and commitment and for bringing attention to finding a cure for Leukemia. Thank you for honoring Laurence and for making a difference. Laurence is smiling...

I have been thinking about my time with Laurence over the years and about our recent visits at the hospital, then at home where he was under hospice care. His life has touched so many people in so many different ways. What stands out in my mind right now is his gratitude. While visiting him at the hospital, he said "thank you" more times than I could possibly count. He thanked every person every time they came into his room. Whether it was to feed him, take his blood, empty the trashcan - it didn't matter. He thanked each for their caregiving and support.

"An attitude of gratitude" and similar phrases are not unfamiliar to me. I have heard numerous strategies such as "write a thank-you note every day" or "think of something you are thankful for before you go to sleep at night." In my time with Laurence, however, I encountered an example of the gratitude that St. Paul meant when he wrote "in every thing give thanks."

Laurence had many reasons to feel frustrated or discouraged, angry or afraid. I know he experienced much pain and discomfort. Even so, he has provided me with the most striking example of gratitude I have ever seen in my 59 years. For that, all I can say is,

Thank you, Laurence.

Missing Him

Book learning and research is utterly useless when facing death. Whatever preparation I thought I had was meaningless when death arrived just after midnight. Reality is shattered along with my heart. I am so grateful for the comfort of family and friends and for your faithful prayers.

While I know Laurence is at peace and that wholeness has been revealed in an extraordinary way, I already miss touching his face and holding his hand. He lives now in our hearts. Your prayers and loving messages are most deeply appreciated.

A memorial service is being planned. I will share details as they are available.

While I do not fear death, I am overwhelmed at the thought of grief. I fear it to be an enormous black hole filled with despair and darkness. I am grateful for the support of several ministers and many friends who have been walking with me through this journey for the past three years and helping move through the stages of grief.

I realized while I am feeling these feelings of sadness, you may be as well. It is no surprise to anyone reading this that Laurence was deeply loved by a vast number of people. He left an indelible mark on everyone he connected with, however brief the encounter. He was a man of extraordinary patience, love and kindness.

I believe his consciousness is already one with God. Although his body is here, he no longer lives in our home but in the eternal goodness of God’s love and grace. You are free to take your message directly to him. Talk with him. Share with him the difference he made in your life. Write a letter in your journal. Share about him with a friend.

We had a powerful prayer circle tonight as we acknowledged his gifts and love. He is still sleeping peacefully. Thank you for sending prayers of love and peace.

Resting

Laurence is resting peacefully. It is a blessing to have him at home. His pain is being managed with a morphine pump. Although he is no longer able to speak, his presence is one of peace and love.

FYI: Laurence's birth name was Larry until he changed it in 1998.

I am a friend of Larry’s from high school - He was a blessing to ALL of us then and he still is 35 years later! I decided to raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in his name and will be running in the Portland Marathon along with some friends as Team Green. Check out our website.

I am also hosting a wine bottling/bake sale fundraiser to help Christine & Larry with the expenses of everyday life & their mounting medical bills.

As Larry was making his decision to move to hospice last Saturday (I had no idea) I was thinking this:

"As I was out there this morning at 5 am pounding the pavement doing 14 miles.....I pondered why??? A song came on my ipod that said it all...this is the time of my life!! The time to do something for a very dear friend that he is unable to do right now ♥

I pondered what an awesome man Larry Green is...how he touched sooo many of us in high school & still today 35 years later...I saw his handsome face as moved forward: I do it for you Larry ..my friend..my hero ♥

Surrender

When Laurence was in the hospital last January receiving chemo he told me that in his next career he wanted to be the chaplain on the 14th floor at OHSU and help other patients dealing with leukemia. While he never completed any chaplaincy program, his presence of love ministers to all those who care for him, pray for him, love him and think of him. His chaplaincy moves far beyond the 14th floor as his friends and family around the world are touched by his light and love.

Laurence consciously made a choice to move into hospice care. There is a beautiful presence of freedom and peace about him. He will be moved home on Saturday. His family started to arrive today. His clarity and strength continue to be amazing.

You continue to be a blessing every step of this journey. I will keep you informed of the process. Your prayers for peace and freedom are appreciated.

I was honored when Christine asked me to visit Laurence in the hospital to give him Reiki. This hands-on-healing technique is essentially a Japanese stress-reduction practice, but for me it has evolved to include a profound Christian aspect. I have been praying for Laurence over the past year, and have always felt his strong loving connection with Jesus. I was still unprepared in my Reiki sessions with Laurence to see and feel the presence of Jesus in the room with us. It has been a gift I can barely write about without tears of gratitude.

During my most recent visit, while I was leaning over one side of Laurence with my hands over his heart, I could feel Jesus doing the same on the other side. At one point I closed my eyes in prayer, and as I saw Jesus approach the bed in my mind’s eye, the sun pulsed brighter and brighter through my eyelids. Each time I have been with Laurence, I have been humbled by the great feeling of Love that fills the room.

Laurence’s ministry of Love and Compassion is evident even as he lay sleeping in his hospital bed.

Peace

It's been a tough few days. The steroids are taking a toll with increased anxiety. Otherwise there are no changes.

Changes

Laurence was moved to another room today that has a lift. He has lost a lot of mobility over the past week and can no longer stand to move from the bed to his wheelchair. The lift allows his nurse to transport him in a sling which will make it easier and safer to move him.

His doctor said they will be increasing his steroid meds to help combat his stomach distress. It is a little risky but they are anxious to find a solution to his pain and discomfort. They will continue the antibiotic for his bladder infection. Of all his symptoms, the bladder infection is the most serious. His doctors said that the infection is possibly preventing his bone marrow from producing adequate blood cells and platelets. All of this is taking a toll on his mental abilities and he has increased anxiety and confusion.

Despite everything going on in Laurence's body, there is an extraordinary presence of love that surrounds him. His smile radiates love as it always has.

I am so grateful for the dedicated staff that cares for him and so grateful for all of you for your continued prayers and love.

Laurence has received blood products and platelets the past few days. He continues to be treated for the infections. He has occasional pain in his abdomen and is very tired.

The doctors are keeping a close eye on him. It will be at least a week before they know if the meds for the bladder infection are working.

Laurence's bladder infection returned along with an infection in his colon. His doctor put him on a new more aggressive antibiotic.

Laurence's doctor sent in five different specialists to help brainstorm how to best treat his infections.

Our friends Sandi and Lynn both reminded me of the scripture from Matthew 17:20:

I tell you the truth. If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.

Finding Peace

Laurence's white blood cell count was very low today. His doctor performed another bone marrow biopsy trying to find out why it has dropped so quickly.

Laurence is frustrated from so many symptoms attacking so many places in his body. Every time he is anxious we pray together and he especially finds peace in Psalm 103:

Bless the LORD, O my soul:
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name.
Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits:
He forgives all my iniquities
and heals all my diseases;
He redeems my life from destruction
and crowns me with loving kindness and tender mercies;
He satisfies my mouth with good things;
so that my youth is renewed like the eagle's.

Quiet Days

Quiet few days. Laurence's symptoms have calmed without food but not disappeared. He still suffers on occasion from a queasy stomach.

Nine Years

Laurence's symptoms are showing no sign of improvement so this morning he was taken off all liquids. He started receiving IV fluids and nutrition. By stopping all digestive activity his doctor hopes to calm the GVHD. The benefit is that he will be receiving nutrition and protein which he has been missing from a liquid diet. He is very tired and other than occasional cramping is not experiencing pain.

Today is our nine year wedding anniversary. We said a prayer of gratitude for our partnership and the blessings in our lives. You are an amazing part of our blessings.

Quiet Days

Quiet few days. Attempts to move off the liquid diet have been unsuccessful.

Laurence worked a little with physical therapy today. He was glad to get some exercise.

I asked Laurence what he would like to say about today. "Today was a blessed day. Everything was blessed all the way around."

Love in Action

The urinary tract infection that Laurence has is a tough one. His doctors have him on several antibiotics to heal the infection and steroids to fight the graft vs host (GVHD). He is now on an all liquid diet to help the colon rest and repair.

He is twelve weeks into his transplant, so his doctor did a bone marrow biopsy to measure his progress. We should have results in a few days.

We did have a good report this week. Result of an MRI shows improvement over the last one done in June. Praise God!

In spite of pain and discomfort, Laurence continues to inspire everyone with his gracious kindness and love. He is truly an example of love in action.

Faith, prayers and love get us through each day. Thank you for thinking of us and sending prayers our way.

Back to OHSU

Laurence was re-admitted to OHSU yesterday afternoon. The doctor at rehab was concerned about his dehydration, confusion and host of other symptoms and contacted his oncologist at OHSU. His test results show that he has a urinary tract infection and the beginning stages of graft vs host disease. His doctor started him on new meds.

He rested today and was finally able to eat some soup. He had a slight fever tonight.

I am grateful that he is in the right place and getting the treatment he needs. I am grateful for your prayers.

Test Results

Laurence had the test on Wednesday to look at his GI tract and the report shows he has significant ulcers in his colon. He has had a difficult time eating and digesting for at past two weeks. We will find out today what meds will be prescribed.

Laurence is very frustrated, confused and sad. He told me yesterday he so wants to be healthy again. He had a tough day with his therapies.

RIO recommends the family member spends 24 hours at the hospital taking care of the patient without assistance. It is intended to help understand all that goes into care of the patient. My 24 hours starts this afternoon. I accept all prayers for strength, ease and grace.

Each day is a walk in faith. I accept medical bills are paid, resources are provided and help is available each day. Your prayers are a blessing.

God Provides

We had our weekly appointment at OHSU yesterday. Laurence has had digestion problems for a week now. His doctor wants to run another test for graft vs host disease. Not sure when that will happen.

We are preparing for Laurence to be at home by the end of the month. There is concern (from his doctors) that I will burn out from taking care of him. I am well aware that I cannot do the job alone--his medical needs are tremendous. The other option is to place him in skilled nursing facility and that is not an option for me. Insurance will pay for his stay at a skilled nursing facility but will not pay $25/hr for a home health aide to help out and provide respite care. That makes no sense to me. I know Laurence will get better by being at home and not in another facility.

I know that God's blessings will show up as the help, resources, finances, respite care and whatever is needed. Thank you for your continued prayers.

Back to RIO

It's been a busy few days. Laurence was transferred back to RIO on late Friday afternoon. He still has a queasy stomach but all his tests came back negative for any infection.

Laurence is expected to be discharged sometime in the next week. Although it is great news, there are many details to be handled in order for him to be safe and healthy at home.

Will you please stand in agreement with our intentions:

1. We gratefully accept that daily medical and health needs are met with ease and grace.

2. We accept loving assistance from friends and family in supporting Laurence’s daily activities.

3. We live in gratitude for the gracious abundance of Christ knowing all our financial needs are met.

4. We gratefully live in safety, free from harm or injury, being fully protected at all times.

5. We gratefully know that every person participating in Laurence’s care is blessed and prospered from their service.

Laurence was transferred to a room on the 14th floor late last night. Just another small miracle in the life of Laurence! Had lots of tests, received blood and a hefty dose of antibiotics.

He was feeling much better today. Did great work with his therapists and they were thrilled to see his progress since he has been in rehab.

The results of most of his tests are in and are negative. Praise God! Still waiting for results of blood cultures. Hoping to head back to rehab by Saturday.

Laurence was admitted to OHSU today after his appointment with his oncologist. He's had several issues the last several days, enough to cause his doctor to be concerned and admit him to the hospital.

Unfortunately, the hospital is 110% full and there are no available beds, so he is spending tonight in the emergency room. Laurence is such a trooper. In spite of the noise, confusion and conditions, he is calm and peaceful.

Please join me in knowing that wisdom guides the doctors and harmony prevails in the ER and wholeness is revealed.

Went to the weekly appointment so see Laurence's oncologist yesterday at OHSU. We discovered that Laurence does not have a bladder infection but his symptoms are related to the graft-versus-host disease from his transplant. His doctor prescribed new meds.

It was a tough weekend. Although Laurence has many successes each day, he has a mountain of challenges that face him. One effect of the stroke is that his brain hasn't caught up with the reality of his circumstances. He lives only in the moment and rejoices each new accomplishment.

I think it may be the way God intended for us to live. I've never been more aware of the courage and depth of faith that it takes.

Unplugged

Laurence is unplugged! His feeding tube was removed today. Praise God. He is relearning to use utensils and I am learning the art of eating very very very slowly. It is a joy to help him eat and he is so appreciative of food.

His nurse commented today that usually she sees progress in a patient once a week. Laurence has a new skill every day.

Laurence and I went to OHSU yesterday to see the transplant doctor. Dr G was pleased to see Laurence's improvement. Laurence will have a bone marrow biopsy in a couple of weeks to further evaluate the transplant.

Every Tuesday is a conference at RIO with the doctors and all therapists giving their reports on Laurence's progress. Although it is too early to establish a timeline, they were each encouraged with Laurence's progress.

Laurence and I say a prayer before I leave and it is wonderful to hear him pray again. His words are clear and strong.

"Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." Mark 11:24 Thank you for your gracious prayers and love.

Determination

Days are very full with therapy. Speech therapists are working on getting Laurence to swallow so he can eat and get the feeding tube taken out. Made some good progress today.

Laurence is so determined! He's starting to become aware of how much he needs to relearn and has moments of feeling overwhelmed. But he is a fighter. Every time a therapist asks if he wants to stop he says no and keeps going.

I tell him every day how many people are praying for us. We send you prayers of thanksgiving and love. We are both very grateful.

Giving Thanks

Today was very peaceful compared to the hectic day yesterday. Laurence was out of bed and in a wheelchair for about three hours today. His nurse took him on a tour of the rehab area and he used the arm cycle machine. Praise God!

His therapy schedule is intense. He is definitely worn out by the end of the day. Still dealing with a low grade infection.

I had a chance to soak in the beauty of the peaceful meditation garden on the hospital grounds this afternoon and and give thanks for all our blessings and for all of you. Thank you so much.

Insurance approved, doctors agreed and Laurence will be transferred tomorrow to RIO-- the Rehabilitation Institute of Oregon located at Good Samaritan Hospital. Praise God!!

His therapists were thrilled with his progress today. He sat up longer and his muscles are getting stronger. His therapists are confident that he will see even more progress with RIO's intense therapy program of three hours a day.

Laurence is still within his first 100 days of transplant so care must be taken to prevent infection. Laurence will have to go back to OHSU if there is any related transplant problems.

Laurence was restless today. I think he was missing his physical therapy session.

The next step in Laurence's progress is to move to rehab facility. I have been checking out different facilities nearby the past few days. I am hopeful that his doctors will recommend acute rehab which is about 3 to 4 hours of therapy a day.

Moving to rehab means leaving the 14th floor at OHSU. He's been there 47 days! Although I am very grateful for his progress, it's hard to imagine being somewhere else. The care there is exceptional. Thank you for your generous treats for the staff. They are amazing individuals.

My prayer is knowing that the next stage of Laurence's care is as professional, supportive and exceptional as the care he has been receiving. Thanks for your partnership and love.

One Day at a Time

Laurence has been working this week with physical therapy as well as occupational and speech therapy and is making slow but steady progress.

He had some intense pain from a bladder infection yesterday and is being treated for it and is more comfortable.

After a very sleepy weekend, Laurence was very awake and alert today. His voice was strong and clear. He worked with his occupational therapist for a while.

There are several rosaries hanging on his IV pole as well as a beautiful medal Tom and Heidi Hill brought back from the Seattle marathon. Today his nurse told me that he finished the last of his IV meds. Another amazing blessing. Praise God!

Loraine is back in Sacramento and our friend Dave heads back to Reno tomorrow. Having them both here has been so supportive and healing for me in so many ways and I know Laurence was lifted by their loving energy in the room.

The response from the staff to your generous treats is awesome to watch. They feel appreciated and Laurence is lovingly cared for.

A week ago Jason, Melinda, Daniel and I were devastated as the doctors told us of Laurence's failing health and suggested that we honor his last wishes. It was truly our darkest hour.

Prayer, patience and faith proved the test results to be in error and Laurence is improving each day. He replies to questions, says I love you and he hears everything. Today he winked at me and smiled. Praise God!

Even though the doctors are frustrated in not knowing exactly what happened after the transplant, they do know that Laurence suffered a stroke. It wasn't the best news to hear. But here is our report so far: the diagnosis of a fatal brain infection was reversed, the incurable blood disorder is on the mend and his weakened heart grows stronger each day. We could deal with this. Laurence is a fighter and we agreed to fight with him.

He continues to improve each day and is responding well to physical therapy. The cardiologist said he is not sure what happened but was happy to take credit for Laurence's improvement. I just smiled. There is no question in my mind that his recovery is due to your amazing partnership and prayer and God's extraordinary grace. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to is purpose." Romans 8:28

Dear Fellow Lovers of Laurence,

Here on the 14th floor of OSHU, Laurence rests and seems to draw strength with each breath. He hand-squeezed on command today, a milestone, although I half suspect that some of his failure to do so before now is simply his defiance over doing anything 'on command'. He has the most marvelous yawns, wide and deep, and he belly-laughs. He cries sometimes, apparently sad but not in pain. Last night he spoke "wonderful" in his own strong resonant voice.

The doctor says he is improving every day. Current plan is for another week or two here, and then on to rehabilitation before coming home.

Christine reminds me of a circling hawk, searching for some good news to 'prey' upon. One couldn't imagine greater devotion. The biggest response from L. was after I whispered in his ear that we were all taking good care of her - he quivered about a 10 on the richter scale.

I've had the intense pleasure of meeting his beautiful sister Lorraine, who is keeping watch over the three of us here. I don't think a day has gone by without someone from his family being with him.

Laurence was moved out of ICU yesterday and back to the bone marrow transplant unit on the 14th floor. His vitals were stable and he had a quiet day.

Laurence's twin sister, Loraine, is visiting from Sacramento and our friend Amy is also in town from the east coast. I appreciate them both being here.

Your letters are wonderful and I am enjoying reading them to Laurence. Each one is a precious gift. Thanks so much.

Power of Prayer

The doctors continue to search for answers while I am so grateful to each of you for standing firmly in your faith. At one point over the weekend, they came to us with devastating news that Laurence had a severe infection in his brain and if the infection didn't get the best of him, the medicine needed to treat it would. They rescinded their statement today, after the specialist read the test results and saw that there is no infection. Prayer in action. Praise God.

Laurence is awake and responding slowly. He cried, he smiled, he said his name. Tonight he told Daniel, "I love you too."

There are other theories and diagnoses but I feel the most important thing to know is that all things are possible in God. I truly believe that our job is to stand in the word of God and build our faith. This may be the greatest gift Laurence gives to us, to walk a closer walk with God. And the greatest gift we give to Laurence is to know Wholeness is revealed. Thank you so much.

Paula left yesterday and arrived safely back in China. I will miss her terribly. She was a great support and friend these last 5 weeks.

Laurence's son Jason left today. Melinda leaves tomorrow and Daniel on Tuesday. It was a joy to have them here and get to know them better. This experience has brought us together in love in a powerful way. I know Laurence has been blessed by their presence.

Laurence is more alert. The breathing ventilator has been removed and he is breathing on his own. The doctors are still very concerned and cautious about his limited progress and multiple symptoms.

I am so grateful for the treats for the staff, rides to the airport and abundance of prayers and love. God is so gracious. Blessings.

Jason made two trips to the airport today with Paula. This morning he picked up his sister, Melinda who flew in from Houston and this afternoon he picked up his brother Daniel from New Orleans. Laurence perked up as each of them arrived. What a joy to have everyone together!

The doctors were pleased with his progress today. His movements may seem minor but they are significant changes from a week ago.

Laurence definitely responded today to our voices. The doctors were also pleased to see his response to their commands. His platelet level continues to decrease even though he has received them two days in a row.

There are still a number of issues that are concerning to the doctors, including not understanding the cause of so many of his symptoms. Several other departments have been pulled into finding a solution.

We know wholeness and harmony for Laurence, clarity for the doctors and peace for all family members. Many thanks for your prayers and good thoughts.

Doctors ran more tests today. Ruled out some possible infections and was able to take Laurence off a couple of the antibiotics. Laurence received platelets this afternoon.

Laurence had a good day yesterday and a restful night. His vitals and blood levels have stabilized. The doctors ran a couple more tests yesterday.

I am so grateful Paula was able to postpone leaving for another week. It is a blessing to have her here and walk through this together.

The night nurse reported Laurence had a restful night. They were able to take him off blood pressure medicine which is very encouraging.

Seeing Laurence in ICU with all the tubes, wires and equipment is unsettling. I decided to see every tube and wire going into Laurence filled with love and light and all the prayers being sent as beams of love into his body and especially his heart.

The meds relieved Laurence's pain but are now causing him to feel sleepy and disoriented. They also found high levels of the immune suppressant drug which slow down kidney function.

Paula's transplanted cells are beginning to reproduce cells in Laurence's body which is great news. Unfortunately, the way we know this is by the increased level of pain that Laurence feels. After a rough night, the staff finally found the right combination of pain relief medication.

Yesterday I learned how to flush the lines in Laurence's port and tomorrow I learn how to change his dressing.

We are so grateful that the process continues to unfold so graciously. Every prayer is deeply appreciated. Blessings.

I participated in a class this morning for care givers of transplant patients. I am grateful for the clarity and information that was provided. Laurence is now being tracked by the number of days post transplant. Today is Day +8.

I learned that as Laurence's cells adjust, he will experience a variety of symptoms, especially first 100 days. This is a dynamic process and there is no magic date or test result. There are benchmarks to look for that indicate that Laurence is on track and so far he is.

The doctors adjusted Laurence's meds since Monday and he is doing much better. He is grateful for the cards and emails and we are both appreciative of your prayers. Sending grateful hugs your way.

Amber, Christi, Sean and Sam are angels. They are kind, caring, knowledgeable, confident, considerate and compassionate. As is the rest of the staff on the 14th floor. The doctors, nurses, aides, technicians, cleaning staff and food service staff always have a smile and a kind word.

Headed Home

Laurence's Mom and sister, Toni headed back home to southern California today. (Of course, they left the one day the sun came out!) It was wonderful to have them in Portland. They were a great support for Paula and Laurence and I were so glad they were here.

Paula is an amazing person. She always knew she would be the match for Laurence and has been so enthusiastic about the process. She went through several days of injections to help build her blood which gave her flu-like symptoms. The port installed in her neck was not very comfortable and removing the port was just plain painful. She never complained but was always willing to do what was needed. She is truly a blessing.

Laurence is taking one day at a time and is doing well as his body adjusts to his new blood cells. Most of his symptoms so far are due to the new medications.

Adjustment

Laurence was tired but had a good day today. The days immediately after the transplant are referred to as the honeymoon period. The new cells have found their way into Laurence's bone marrow and are adjusting to their new home for about five to seven days. After they adapt they will begin to produce new blood cells. This is when Laurence may experience fevers, chills and other symptoms and is suspect to infection. We are in prayer knowing harmony in his body and ease and grace in this process.

The transfusion part of the process is underway. It will take about two hours to complete. Laurence's vitals will be closely monitored today and in the days ahead.

Apheresis Complete

We're all here in Laurence's room. The doctors decided to proceed as a stem cell transplant.The stem cells engraft faster than bone marrow and the process is easier on the donor.

Paula's process started at 6 a.m. She had a port installed in her neck similar to the one Laurence has. From there she went to another department for the apheresis process where Paula gave blood from which they extract the stem cells. The blood is then counted to determine how many stem cells were produced. If there is not enough, she will give more blood tomorrow.

Paula is a little sore but she is comfortable. Praise God! The actual transplant over to Laurence will happen in the next couple of hours. It is similar to getting a blood transfusion. It takes about a week for the cells to get acclimated to Laurence's body before they will begin producing their own cells.

Thanks for your prayers knowing that Laurence receives Paula's stem cells with ease and grace. Blessings.

Laurence has been able to manage his symptoms during the first four days of chemo. He will receive a more potent drug the next two days. Paula received the first of several injections that help build her blood in preparation for the transplant. The transplant process is scheduled to begin on June 2nd.

Laurence's Mom and sister Toni arrived yesterday from Los Angeles and are staying at the hotel with Paula. We all had a wonderful dinner together last night.

Laurence was admitted today and had the new port successfully installed.

Chemo starts tomorrow. This week of chemo is much more aggressive than the chemo Laurence had in December. I reprinted and posted the acronym for chemo in his room.

Laurence is scheduled to be admitted to OHSU on Tuesday. He will have a new port installed in his chest which will allow blood to be drawn. His doctors will also use the port to give chemo which will begin on Wednesday.

Paula has been visiting the clinic this week to give blood and for other tests to prepare for the transplant. The transplant will take place sometime the first week in June. This link will give you more information if you would like to learn more about the transplant process.

Laurence's courage is inspiring. I know God's Love is an enormous well of faith and strength that Laurence is able to tap into and walk this journey as he does with his beautiful smile and gracious heart.

I appreciate all the emails and offers of support for this week. Your prayers are most important and deeply appreciated for ease and grace for Laurence and Paula, wisdom for the doctors and hospital staff, and in knowing that wholeness is revealed. Grateful thanks.

Moving Forward

Laurence has been making good progress with his tests in preparation for the transplant. He brought home a hefty size manual that answers a lot of questions about the transplant and prepares us for the road ahead.

It can be a bit daunting to read about the transplant process. I am so grateful for everyone's prayers. I know the path is made straight with God's grace and wisdom.

Paula arrives tomorrow and begins her process on Monday. Laurence will be admitted to OHSU around the 25th.

Called to Serve

Two years ago Laurence's oncologist sent him to Standford University to talk with a doctor there who had a clinic trial. Laurence was unable to participate in the trial because he didn't meet some of the health requirements.

The doctor from Stanford called the other day and asked if he could use Laurence's DNA in their research. Laurence said he was glad to participate. The research will help others with the same health challenges and possibly find a cure.

There are many ways that God calls on us to serve. What a blessing.

I talked with Paula yesterday to discuss her travel plans. Her company is very generously taking care of all of her travel costs to enable her to be here. Praise God!

Laurence had more tests today. He is a bit tired but is doing well.

Deep Appreciation

Laurence had a break from doctor visits for the last couple of days. He is appreciating a few days of rest before appointments start back on Monday.

Some days the process feels very challenging and it is a blessing to know that there are prayers being said around the country. Thank you so much!

A Match!

Paula's test results came back and she is a match! Praise God! The doctors are proceeding with planning for Laurence's bone marrow transplant.

The next few weeks are filled with labs, doctor visits and tests. Laurence will undergo a battery of tests to ensure he is physically capable of undergoing a transplant. Laurence had a bone marrow biopsy today and is resting. As you can imagine, the process is intense and is mentally and physically exhausting.

I will keep you posted on his progress. If you have specific questions, please direct them to me. I am doing my best to protect his energy while he prepares for his procedure.

Laurence is doing well. I was away on a short vacation so he had a very quiet week:) He visits the clinic at least twice a week to get his blood checked. Today he is also seeing his oncologist.

Paula's Visit

We're having a great weekend visiting with Laurence's sister Paula. She is currently living and working in China and it has been so interesting to hear her stories of life in Shanghai. The weather cooperated and we were able to fit in some sightseeing.

Paula went to the clinic on Friday for her blood test to see if she is a bone marrow match for Laurence. The results will be available in about 10 days.

Laurence's health has been stable. He is scheduled for chemo again later in the month.

Laurence continues to visit the clinic several days a week to have his blood checked. He had a blood transfusion one day and received platelets a couple different times. We are so grateful to our friend Zachary and his willingness to help get Laurence back and forth to the clinic.

No news on a donor. Thanks for your continued prayers.

Restful Week

Laurence had a restful week. He made a couple of trips to the clinic for blood work. Chemo depletes any bad cells but unfortunately zaps the body of energy.

March Madness

Laurence finished his first day back receiving chemo. Although the schedule is grueling, the process is flowing easily. He has a day of rest and then back to the clinic on Friday.

Personally, I think March Madness is a much better name for a spectacular day of shopping at Macy's. Although I think I understand the madness part...

Laurence left for chemotherapy treatment this morning. He will be there about six hours. He'll come home to rest and have dinner and then return tonight for another six hours.

The acronym for chemo is: Christ Has Everything Miraculously Ordered

Good Weekend

We enjoyed our weekend. We were able to get out and see a movie on Friday and went out to dinner today. Laurence will have labs done tomorrow to see if his blood level is adequate for another round of chemo.

It's time for a smile and a grandkids photo. Great reminder of the important things in life.
